I'm bias but it was so awesome to be able to talk aboot this! I'd love to here was others thought too. Also - a really awesome book to read is Asia Booth Clarke's memoir. @Darin Weeks & I can't recommend that one enough!
I enjoyed the episode, though my experience with it was different than the majority of the episodes. As I mentioned in my recent review of The Assassin's Accomplice on the forum Booth is not an area I have studied frequently. I have read much more about the battles and campaigns, military personalities, etc. So this episode made me think a bit and was a thoughtful discussion.
Beyond the specific topic of the episode though, there is a important take-away in my opinion that should not be overlooked and that is to study what you want to study, learn about all areas, do not be afraid to tackle a difficult or uncomfortable subject. Your interest in a subject is not wrong, and we should be able to have open dialog about all subjects. History is not my profession, I am a complete amateur at this, but I believe it is important to promote inclusiveness and discussion of everything, real history is going to make you uncomfortable at times but that is ok, that is how we learn.
We really appreciate your thoughts aboot the episode @long2821! It was a very enjoyable one to record and so interesting for both of us since we have both been fascinated with Booth and the assassination for a long time. The assassination was my gateway to studying the Civil War when I was a kid. We are planning on doing more episodes aboot it in the future too.
Also, thank you for your thoughts on the study of history! That is how we feel aboot it too. We want to have a place where people feel included and free to voice their opinions without being told "you're wrong". Studying has never made me uncomfortable - it was always how it was viewed by others that did, like I was doing something wrong. I don't feel that way anymore though. You can't tell the whole story without look at the uncomofortable or darker parts of history.
I must admit that I have been so buried in desk work & trying to get my Chess game on par with a good friend of mine that I have not been able to catch up to the latest episodes. I am going to make a note & take a few hours out of each day this week & be sure to watch you two. I'm excited to see how the latest went with the Award winning Author. Looks promising & something that I can definitely learn from.
